Production of slimmer MacBook Pro is underway

Digitimes reported on Friday citing sources in the supply chain partners, indicating that Apple is improving its Macbook Pro by adopting a slimmer design by removing the ODD – optical disk drive. Mass production of MacBook Pro 13- and 15-inch models is under way and initial shipments of 100,000-150,000 units are already planned.

Without the optical disk drive, the MacBook Pro is indeed slimmer and more presentable. It is not only slim but also features advanced specs than the MacBook Air in term of CPU performance and storage capacity.

Production of the slimmer next-generation MacBook Pro has already begun and the batch of first shipments is expected in March, said the sources cited by Digitimes. Apple is expected to increase volume shipment from the initial 100,000-150,000 to 900,000 units according to the sources.

The launching of the new MacBook Pro may coincide with the unveiling of non-apple brands featuring the new Ivy Bridge ultrabooks, the sources noted. New non-Apple ultrabooks were expected to hit the market earlier than the expected release date of Apple’s latest generation MacBook Pro, so that it will be easier to sell without Apple’s competition. However, due to the delays of the shipment of the Ivy Bridge chips, product release of new ultrabooks has to be withheld for the time being.

In an earlier report, Digitimes stated, “Apple is expected to launch new MacBook Pro notebooks with an even thinner and lighter design than existing models in April, at the soonest. [...] Apple is expected to launch upgraded 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pros in April with initial shipments estimated to reach 900,000 units.”
