Intel clarifies Ivy Bridge chips delay
Reports of on an eight-week delay on the Intel Ivy Bridge chips which was allegedly leaked by an executive got the company jumped off its feet to clarify the mistake. “Reports of an eight-week delay to the Ivy Bridge launch are inaccurate and our schedule has only been impacted by a few weeks,” spokesperson Jon Carvill explained. The scheduled release of the Ivy Bridge chip was on April, therefore the delay of a few weeks would put the launch now in May. Meanwhile the planned release of smartphones and other mobile devices was set to May, these will now hit the market sometime in June.
According to a tech website, Cnet Australia, citing Sean Maloney, executive vice-president of Intel and chairman of Intel China, of informing the Financial Times that the Ivy Bridge chips would be delayed until June and that once the Ivy Bridge chips launch, Intel will bring up production faster than the current Sandy Bridge chip.
“We expect to ship over 50 per cent more volume of Ivy Bridge units to the market in the first two quarters of production in 2012 as compared to Sandy Bridge [in the same time frame last year],” Sean Maloney explained. (Source)
One probable cause of the delay could be attributed to PC manufacturers in Asia having difficulties trying to meet up with their laptop inventories, which use the current Sandy Bridge processor because of the weak global economy. This was reportedly forcing Intel to delay Ivy Bridge shipments.
