Intel finally launches the Ivy Bridge chip
Intel announced recently that new PCs powered by its latest generation processor chip – the “Ivy Bridge” will be available for launch this week.
The new generation processor code-named “Ivy Bridge” is the first to feature a 3-D architecture. With new development in technology, Intel was able to pack more features into a small space making the chip smaller but at the same time faster as well as more energy efficient.

The first integrated circuit chip was invented in the 1950s and since then has evolved to what powers our PCs today. According to some analysts, the Ivy Bridge processor is the most significant development of silicon transistor to date.
Obviously, with the Ivy Bridge chip, Intel is now ahead of other chipmakers at least for two to three years.
Intel stated that the first batch of its Ivy Bridge chips will be destined for desktop computers and thereafter on laptop computers to coincide with the “back to School” holiday season. Paul Otellini, CEO of Intel said that about 50 per cent of chip shipment this autumn would be “Ivy Bridge” chips.
The Ivy Bridge is also the first chip constructed with 220 namometer-sized features where the previous models were 32 nanometres.
The smaller space found in the Ivy Bridge means more transistor or working parts can be squeezed in such a small chip but this is by no means hampering speed and performance. Though the chip is small but it can deliver faster performance.
Another important aspect of the Ivy Bridge is that it has an improved 3-D graphics functionality that can reduce reliance for additional processing power from the add-in graphics chip.
Intel informed that the Ivy Bridge chip was delayed for three weeks because it has to wait for enough supply of the chips for the launch.

The American firm says the innovation allows it to offer more computational power while using less energy.
The initial release includes 13 quad-core processors, most of which will be targeted at desktop computers. Intel and PC manufacturers expect the release to drive a wave of new sales.
Further dual core processors, suitable for ultrabooks – thin laptops – will be announced “later this spring”. [More]

The new generation, code-named “Ivy Bridge,” is the first to be made with a 3-D structure. Miniature fins jut out of the plane of the chip, letting Intel cram more features into the same space. That means the chips can be faster while consuming less power. [More]
