Samsung apparently has launched it’s duo giant smartphones – The Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3-inch and 5.8-inch in April and are expected to hit Europe’s stores by May. The mid-range 6.3-inch smartphones is also reported to be a cheaper alternative to Samsung’s Galaxy Note II (The Note II is sold at the cheapest at RM1568, AP Unit). So The Mega I9300 6.3-inch should be price below RM1568 as an AP unit. The device also sports some decent specs such as a dual-core 1.7 GHz Krait CPU, Adreno 305 GPU and of course the latest Android V4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) operating system and in addition it also has an 8 MP camera measured at 3264 x 2448 pixels, with autofocus and LED flash. It seems that Samsung is on the road to produce larger smartphones, 5-inch Galaxy S4 and now 6.3-inch, but I will stick with my dual-SIM Galaxy Grand at the moment. The Samsung Galaxy S4 I9500 has been on sale in Malaysia for a few weeks now. Locally, I noted that this new device from Samsung has a sale price of over RM2K – at ipmart.com the phone is sold for RM2179 with SME warranty and free shipping, at Lazada it is sold for RM2099 with local manufacturer warranty and also with free shipping, elsewhere in at Lelong price are all exceeding the RM2K mark. I am not going to talk about the specs here because a lot of tech websitse such as gsmarena has in-depth coverage of the its specifications. I finally got myself a brand new Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos GT-I8092 after selling off my Sony Xperia E Dual. It really difficult to change camp from Sony to Samsung after years of only owning Sony brands. Sony currently doesn’t have a 5-inch smartphone with dual-SIM, this is the main reason why I switched to Samsung.

I am not going to talk about the tech specs of the Samsung Galaxy Grand because there are a lot of tech websites covering the issue, the best of them is Gsmarena website. I am merely sharing with you the experience that I had with a two call plans from DiGi.

To start with, I have two active prepaid plans with DiGi – one a normal call and SMS plan known as Digi Best Prepaid and an internet plan – DG Prepaid Smartplan. I found it more economical to have two plans than only relying on a single plan for all services – data, call and sms. I have tried using the Digi’s Digi Best Prepaid for Data (RM30 /RM1 per day for 1 month of 600MB) but after using for only a few days I have already utilized 50% of the 600 MB allocated for the month. This is not the case for the DG Prepaid SmartPlan. I have not carried out any thorough research yet but I am positive that the DG Prepaid SmartPlan as being a dedicated data plan is cheaper to use than the normal Digi prepaid plans.

Apart from data, you can get free call, SMS and MMS for the DG Prepaid Smartplan. A reload of RM10 you get 200MB of data, 20 minutes voice call, 20 SMS and 10 MMS with a validity of 10 days and the best thing about it is that you will not lose your balance even after the expiry date unlike some data service providers such as TuneTalk where your data balance (if you still have some) is gone after expiry.

After using my DG Prepaid SmartPlan for over 2 months and with two reloads of RM 30 I still have these balances – Voice: 1 hour and 33 minutes, SMS 19 units, MMS (Digi to Digi) 57 units and Internet 859.81 MB bearing in mind however that I am a modest data user, I only use data when I am at work or away from my dedicated WiFi at home.

I use the DG Prepaid Smartplan for my calls and internet while text messages are concentrated on the other plan. I never used MMS so I have a balance of about 57 units to be utilize and I believe the balance will keep on climbing because as I said earlier I never use them.

Some users may prefer using a single plan but after years of using data and call, I feel that a separate plan is still the cheapest. This is what I think the best at least for me, you may have your own plans that work best for you.

I think Sony is really in trouble especially in their electronics division. I am a Sony person, a great fan of Sony’s Xperia range of smartphones, I have owned the Sony Ericsson X10, the Xperia Go and now the Xperia E Dual. A report from AFP below suggests that Sony might have to change its projection, notably in the problematic electronics sector. I also got to know that previously Sony’s top managers are awarded several million dollars in bonuses. These people are really rich!

As I was browsing through my Facebook page just now I came across ZTE‘s latest post on its FB page – revealing its all new ZTE Geek, an Intel inside powered sporting a rather large 5-inch screen. This new device was debuted at the IDF 2013 and according to ZTE is is powered by Intel’s 2nm Atom processor platform Z2580 featuring a dual-core 2GHz clock speed. More on specs are stated below:

Dancing with my Sony Xperia E Dual

It has been quite a while since my last blog post. I have decided that I will only blog when I have the time and would quit publishing the technology syndicated content all together. I realized that the syndicated content though rich in content but does not reflect my point of view and my style of writing. So, from now onwards, I will be writing on any tech topics that I am interested in without worrying about the rules of writing or the grammatical mistakes that come with it. I just want to write on things that I like and at the same time may reflect the kind of blogger I am.

Just a week ago I bought an entry level Sony Xperia E Dual Android smartphone. My previous phone is an Xperia Go (you could say that I am a fan of Sony smartphones) which is a mid-range phone. So why did I downgrade? Mainly because my teenage son has been bragging me to hand him my Xperia Go and secondly due to the fact that I need a dual-SIM phone for my work. I will explain about what is so special about the dual-SIM capability later.

The Sony Xperia E dual is powered by Android OS v4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and sports a 1 GHz Cortex-A5 processor with 512 MB RAM. It has a 3.5-inch, 320 x 480 pixel display. It also comes with a 3.15-megapixel camera that is able to record videos. It comes with 4GB of built-in storage, and is able to support microSD cards of up to 32GB. I bought the phone for RM489 (US$169) but I added a few items including a screen protector (RM12) and a leather casing (RM30) which totaled up to RM531. After a few days using the phone I noticed that it run as good as the Xperia Go if not better. Bear in mind though that this is a new model, preloaded with Android 4.0.4 Ice cream Sandwich out the box. The Xperia Go has Android Gingerbread out of the box but I have it upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich but unfortunately it has a slightly slowed performance after the upgrade.

Going back to why I choose such a dual-SIM smartphone – taking advantage of how much I can save by using a dual SIM phone. On the first SIM slot (SIM1) I inserted my Tunetalk SIM card and on the second slot (SIM2) I slotted in Digi’s DG Prepaid Smart Plan. Basically, the first SIM is mainly used for calling and sending text messages while the other one is for internet access.

I opt Tunetalk for calling and sending texts because it offers the cheapest rate that is available in Malaysia to date. You can check on Tunetalk’s rate here. On the other hand Digi offers the best in prepaid mobile internet. With RM10 you can get 200MB of data, 20 Mins call, 20 free SMS and 10 MMS (DiGi to DiGi). What is interesting is that you can bring your accumulated balance to the next reload time. To date I have already accumulated a total of 980MB of data and 120 minutes of call time in only three reloads. Bearing in mind however that I am not utilizing my mobile internet the whole time because at home I will be connected to my WiFi, I only use my data connection when there is no WiFi connection available.

I am still reviewing the phone especially on the performance and the dual-SIM capability. The 3.15 camera is decent enough when taking pictures in day lights. I have tried taking pictures in the day light and posting them on Facebook, the quality is acceptable. The phone has no flash so I guess taking pictures in the dark will be a problem. Adoption of plastic chassis may reduce tablet price

The ever increasing demand for cheaper tablets has pushed supply chain makers to adopt plastic chassis especially for entry-level tablets. The move will definitely minimize production cost as well as providing profits for manufacturers and retailers alike. A higher proportion of tablets with plastic-chassis will increase in 2013 according to a tech website, Digitimes.

With the increase use of the plastic chassis will eventually benefits Taiwanese plastic chassis makers such as Ju Teng and Foxconn Electonics (Hon Hai Precision Industry).

Meanwhile, with more brand vendors entering the entry-level tablet market such as Asustek Computer, Amazon and Google, it is also expected that plastic chassis will be the best choice for a lower cost tablets.

Digitimes stated, “Since prices for some tablets may drop to only about US$99 in the second half, adoption of plastic chassis will be a viable option to significantly reduce costs.”

We will be seeing relatively cheaper tablets as early as the third quarter or the first quarter of 2014.
