Samsung sets to join major players in PC market
According to Digitimes, Samsung Electronics has set a target to achieve a 30% on-year growth for notebook shipments by 2012 whereby about 30 per cent of the total volume set for the year would be for ultrabook shipments.
Samsung expects its ultrabook proportion will grow up to 50 per cent by 2013. It is important to note that Samsung has been among the biggest vendor in worldwide consumer electronics especially in the handsets market but it is still struggling to move out from South Koreas for its PC market, to date it has 50 per cent share of the PC market in South Korea.

Samsung however is seeing more light in worldwide PC market, in 2011 alone Samsung saw some 13.1 million notebook sales globally accounting to about 6.1 per cent of the world’s PC market.
Because Samsung has a strong resource from upstream component supplies such as panels, batteries and solid state drives (SSD), making it as a strong contender to other major vendors in the PC markets and could be a strong sign that the company will become one of the largest PC supplier for the global market.
Based on sources cited by Digitimes, Samsung has actually made successful sales on its ultrabook segment. The company has ordered increased production of its popular series 5 Ultra ultrabook in January and February to meet rising demand.
Samsung will continue boosting production of the ultrabooks and expect shipments up to 17 million units in 2012.
Most of Samsung PC devices such as notebooks and ultrabooks were produced locally but decided to outsource production to Compal Electronics to reduce cost.
From the look of it Samsung would eventually join other major players in the PC market while still retain its lead in the handset market.
