Nvidia which is specializing on GPU business for desktop, notebook, memory and Media and Communication processor (MCP) chipset reported a decline of 3.6 per cent revenue, amounting to only US$621.5 million on the last quarter of last year. Nvidia blamed the decline to shortage of hard disk drive (HDD) supplies.  Nvidia also received revenues from its partnership with Intel over patent cross-licence agreement.

In the meantime, sales on Tegra-based Smartphones, tablets as well as Icera-baseband processors and RF transceivers received a major boost with an astounding 200 per cent increase. Icera is a Bristol, U.K.-based developer of baseband processors for 3G and 4G mobile phones and tablets acquired by Nvidia for $367 million in 2011.

Jen-Hsun Huang, president and chief executive of Nvidia, was pleased with the performance of the consumer products division and expects 2012 to be another challenging but profitable year for Nvidia.

He said,”We expect continued growth ahead, as Tegra 3 powers a new wave of quad-core super phones and Kepler, our next-generation GPU architecture, sets new standards in visual and parallel computing,” (Source)

According to a tech web site, V3.co.uk  that the chipmaker will concentrate on manufacturing and supplying quad-core processors for tablets with the Tegra 3 chipset and expects the demand for the chips to increase in 2012. The Tegra 3 is currently powering tablets such as the Android-based Asus Transformer Prime, Acer’s Iconia Tab A700, Lenovo IdeaPad K2 and also HTC’s Edge smartphone.

With the current development on the chipset arena, we would expect more and more smartphones powered by quad-core processors in 2012, of course they will be priced higher than their dual-core counterparts but hopefully will become affordable to most users gradually with time.
