4G LTE, Windows phone and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
4G LTE, Windows phone and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
One of the most talked about topics at CES 2012, was the 4G LTE. Those of us who were not very good in IT, might still be familiar with 2G or 3G, which refers to the second and third generation of mobile phone standards and technology. 3G technology enables fast data transfer on a more advanced network service. So, 4G concerns about a fourth generation of cellular wireless standards in cell phone technology, which means a faster lane for your wireless network.
But what is LTE? Well, LTE simply refers to Long Term Evolution used in 4G network. In the US, 4G LTE is used by telcos such as Verizon and AT&T to deliver wireless services through a super fast network.
In Malaysia, several companies are offering 4G LTE, namely, Celcom Axiata Bhd, DiGi.Com Bhd, Maxis Communications Bhd and U Mobile Sdn Bhd; and four WiMAX firms– Asiaspace Sdn Bhd, Packet One Network (M) Sdn Bhd, REDtone International Bhd dan YTL Communications Sdn Bhd.
According to a source, the 4G LTE technology is able to deliver a network speed from 5 to 12 Mbps. Amongst others these phones are 4G LTE enabled – Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Motorola Droid 4, Droid Razr Maxx, LG Spectrum and many more.
With 4G LTE technology, questions still crops in – do consumers know the differences between 4G and LTE? That question is yet to be answered. What is clear to consumers is that telcos will obviously charge extra for a super fast network, so to a normal user like me will not be troubling myself just to have a faster network. Cheaper network is still the best option for my pocket.
Another aspect hot in the topics is the emergence of Windows powered smart phones. These are high quality smart phones such as HTC’s Titan II and Nokia’s Lumia 900. These Windows phones are getting more and more attention, especially when Windows Phones OS supports ecosystem apps and cloud services. It is expected that more users will turn to Windows phones at the expense of Android, starting this year.
Android 4.0 – Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) is also getting a lot of attention, but with only one device – Samsung Galaxy Nexus offering the latest OS from Android, making it a bit discouraging for some. Although most smart phones are still Gingerbread based, but with Android 4.0, manufacturers will have to make it possible for users to upgrade to the latest OS. My phone is still on firmware 2.1 update 1, and I don’t even know what type of Android is that. One thing is for sure, it haven’t failed me even once and I want to keep it that way, hopefully.
