Intel in February had launched its 520 series SSDs. The firm claimed that the 520 series has a performance speed up to 6.0 gigabits per seconds (Gb/s) and this will enable for faster game and application loadings. The latest Solid-Sate Drive from Intel (Maple Crest & Ramsdale) will have a storage capacity of either 400GB or 800GB and will be equipped with PCIe interface. The Ramsdale SSDs are specifically for business, Intel indicated.

Apart from the models cited earlier, Intel will also release a few more models such as the 500 series, codenamed King Crest, based on 20nm technology and to be released by the third quarter of the year. Intel will also release its 700 series Taylorsville with a storage capacity of 100GB, 200GB, 400GB and 800GB and the 300 series Jay Crest and Oak Crest, in the fourth quarter.

SSDs, though relatively more expensive than its counterpart the HDD but it offers a faster reading and writing process than the traditional HDD. SSD drives use non-volatile NAND flash memory thus has no moving parts, which explain the faster reading and writing. One obvious setback however is its high price; compared to HDDs they cost $3 for gigabyte to the HDDs’ 20-30 cents per gigabyte. However, in 2012 SSDs has become a trend in the computing world and we will expect to see more SSDs in PC devices in the future.
