Apple iPhone 4S and earSmart Technology
The A5 Processor powering Apple’s iPhone 4S has a Noise Reduction Technology embedded in the chip. This is probably the reason why Siri could not be ported to the older iPhone 4. The NRS (Noise Reduction Technology) was purportedly supplied by Audience to Apple. Audience who also supplies processors to Protek and Foxconn had an agreement with Apple since 2008.
According to PlanetInsane, an earlier teardown of the iPhone made by iFixit demonstrated a chip manufactured by Audience. The iPhone 4S however has the earSmart technology embedded into the A5 CPU which is not present in the older model. The earSmart technology removes background sound to make possible a clear reception even in a highly raucous environment. The new technology was claimed to have been incorporated into apple’s smartphones beginning 31st December last year. One of these phones is the iPhone 4S. Based on trusted sources, Audience has given Apple a license to use its technology or IP in which Audience will receive a royalty every quarter for the use of their IP on Apple’s smartphones.
This arrangement by Apple and Audience sheds light to the reason why the iPhone 4S did not have an Audience chip, Audience’s technology was actually embedded directly into the A5 chip which inevitably made the A5 chip larger than the processors used in the iPhone 4.
This also explains why Siri’s features cannot be ported to the older iPhone. Eventhough some users may still be able to install Siri into their iPhone4 devices but some reports indicated that they were unstable and with very low quality.
