Largan Precision to dominate shipments of 8 megapixels smartphone lens
A Taichung-based company, Largan Precision announced in February that about 50 percent of its lens shipments worldwide are 8-megapixel models while another 20 per cent accounting for the 5-megapixel models and the rest making up for the smaller resolutions such as 1,2 and 3 megapixels.
Largan claimed that the smartphone platform remains to be the major contributor to the company’s expanding shipments of lens but also expect tablet PCs to contribute more in the near future. In February, lens shipments for the tablet PC market only accounted for about 10 per cent of Largan’s revenues.
According to Digitimes, Largan Precision expect its revenues to drop close to 10 per cent in the first quarter of 2012 due to the fact that clients have yet to place order for their new smartphone models for 2012.
As for future projection, Largan also anticipate mainstream camera lens specification for smartphones to remain at 8-megapixels at least for 2012, additionally shipments of HD or Full HD camera lens are also expected to rise due to growing demands from consumers for quality video recording and therefore should boost the company’s revenues for the year.
Digitimes reported back in May 2011 that Largan Precision might perhaps become the main supplier of 8-megapixel lens modules for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 5 and in September 2011 a report from Taiwan Economic News also claimed that besides Largan Precision Co., Ltd., another company, Genius Electronic Optical Co., Ltd will also be supplying Apple for their next-generation iPhone with orders expected to be placed very soon.
“The two companies are reported to continue supplying lenses for Apple’s newest iPhone 5 with an 8-megapixel camera. With relatively higher production yield, Largan, commanding nearly 20% of the global market, will reportedly garner a big order from Apple, “ stated The Taiwan Economic News.
