The San Diego-based chip designer Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM) claimed that its dual-core S4 Snapdragon chip outperforms the quad-core Tegra 3 chipset from Nvidia.
Rob Chandhok, a Senior Vice President of software strategy for Qualcomm said that it is not just the CPU speed and the number of cores that matter but ultimately the overall design of one over the other. He said, “It’s a delicate thing to talk about one design being better than the other, so I’m going to leave you to decide whether four is better than two and whether size matters.”
“The S4 dual-core outperforms most quad-core chips – not because of one thing, but because of the overall systems approach. The S4 Pro MSM8960 processor featuring the Adreno 320 GPU that was announced yesterday will deliver four times better performance and set a new standard for the mobile space,” he added. (source)
Besides being a better chip in delivering high-performance processing power, the S4 is also able to withstand prolonged operation without sacrificing battery life. The Snapdragon S4 will run devices such as the HTC One S and also a hybrid Asus Padfone.
“We don’t just think about how fast the CPU is going to be, but the balance between CPU and GPU – all the components of the hardware chain and how they relate to operating systems,” he said. (source)
Chandhock rejected rumors that Qualcomm chipsets are underpowered to run Windows 8 devices. He stressed, “Rumours that performance is not where it should be are not true. We are happy with what we are launching for Windows 8. Direct X11 is something that we working on for first time. Performance wise we are ahead of competitors in places that matter for consumers.” (source)
No time frame is given by Qualcomm as regards to when the S4 chipset will be available for use with the Windows Phone platform. Chandhok remarked, “We have a deep partnership with Microsoft and worked with them from launch of Windows Phone. The operating system takes advantage of silicon and exploits every feature we have in the chip” (source)
