Taiwan based retailers to offer ultrabook-like PCs in second quarter
Because of the delays in the shipment of the Ivy Bridge processor, (some sources speculate until June) and the relatively high price of Sandy Bridge-based ultrabooks in the market, had propelled some Taiwan retailers to offer ultrabook-like notebooks which is similar in size and slimness to the real ultrabook but less expensive in price. Vendors are retailing the ultrabook-like notebook for US$600 and will be available in the second quarter based on reports from industry sources.
The real ultrabook-based PCs are expensive because they are made of metal cases, expensive hollow hinges and SSDs (Solid State Disk). Moreover, high production costs push retail price up to US$1,000 in contrast with the expected market price, which is in the US$600 to US$700 price range.
Nonetheless, ultrabooks are the norm so Taiwan-based retailers plan to offer slim ultrabook-like PCs using cheaper components and perhaps with cheaper production costs than that of the real ultrabooks.
It was also reported that 7mm-thick mechanical HDDs as well as a mix of plastic and metal chassis are to be implement in the new notebook. Though the ultrabook-like PCs will not meet Intel’s ultrabook requirement but they will sell because of the reasonably lower prices, according to sources quoted by Digitimes.
This is indeed a brilliant endeavor; most customers would be attracted to the slim dimension of a real ultrabook but perhaps be put off over the relatively high cost. Therefore, a cheap ultrabook-like PCs could be an alternative because it has been proven that customers want attractive design as well as affordable price and not much on what is under the hood.
