Currently only Acer and Asustek have confirmed that they are producing Cedar Trail-based netbook although Intel initially announced that the mainstream players such as Samsung, Lenovo and Hewlett-Packard (HP) are also interested in developing their own Cedar-Trail based netbooks.

According to Digitimes some retailers have opted to step away from the industry which will contribute to an apparent drop in netbook shipments this year. In 2011 the global shipments of netbook amounted to 28-30 million units but this is expected to drop to 20-25 million units this year. Asustek and Acer who have decided to stay in the industry will still see some lights over the horizon. They are expected to increase their netbook shipments to more than 4 million units this year.

Because of the popularity of the iPads and Android-based tablets as well as ultrabooks in mature markets such as the US and Europe saw the demand for netbooks plummeting drastically. However, netbooks are still in high demand in emerging market such as China, India and the South East Asian countries. With Intel’s introduction of the 12-inch netbook with a price tag below US$359, demand is expected to remain on a favorable level.

A typical example of a netbook currently on the market is Acers’ 10.1-inch AO270 sporting Intel’s ATOM 2600 processor and runs Windows 7 Starter pack and priced at US$305.
