Who supply displays for the new iPad?
According to Digitimes citing a statement issued by IHS iSuppli that Apple is likely to adopt three qualified suppliers for the display of the new iPad – Samsung, LG Display (LGD) and Sharp.
IHS stated that the three suppliers have been working hard to meet increasing demands since the launch of the new iPad early this month.
IHS however stressed that it was likely that the current volume shipments of the new iPad display are coming from Samsung alone. LG Display and Sharp are only involved in small volume shipment but would increase volume production and shipment by April. Apple will begin shipping new iPads with displays coming from these suppliers (LG Display and Sharp) in the second quarter, IHS iSuppli added.
Currently Sharp is working with a new IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) technology that can provide a much more higher resolution on tablet displays. It has been working on this technology in its factory in Kameyama, Japan but facing some minor setbacks that could affect the steady stream of display supply to Apple.
IHS said that LGD (LG Display) is the leader in the use of advanced in-plane switching (IPS) display technology, especially for use in tablet displays and in 2011 it has 44% share of global unit shipments of tablet display. Samsung on the other hand only account for about 35% share of the tablet display segment while the rest are being shared by Taiwan – and China – based suppliers.
On IHS previous account, Apple is reported to double its spending on display for use in tablets and smartphones in 2012.
